Introduction: Malaria is a disease with a high impact on Colombian population, which must be approached from the point of view of teamwork of institutions for knowledge exchange. Objective: To analyze the interactions of the Red de Gestión del Conocimiento, Investigación e Innovación en Malaria de Colombia. Materials and methods: An analysis of social networks was applied that allowed identifying the proximity between actors and the degree of knowledge between them. Indicators of density, diameter, average distance, and degree of centrality were observed. The documentary corpus for the study consisted of 193 technical documents published between 2016 and 2021, which were analyzed using text mining using the R programming language. The network was categorized based on five variables: comprehensive patient care, diagnosis, epidemiology and health information analysis systems, public policy and promotion and prevention. Results: The analysis of interactions indicated that the network was made up by 99 actors. The main interest in knowledge production was on epidemiology and health information analysis systems (98 % of the actors), followed by the integral patient care (80 % of the actors). On the contrary, the least approached category was malaria promotion and prevention practices (54 % of the actors). Conclusions: In general, this study contributes to the strengthening of key strategies in the dissemination of knowledge about malaria in Colombia.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Multiple-choice-examinations are still fundamental for assessment in medical degree programs. In addition to content related research, the optimization of the technical procedure is an important question. Medical examiners face three options: paper-based examinations with or without computer support or completely electronic examinations. Critical aspects are the effort for formatting, the logistic effort during the actual examination, quality, promptness and effort of the correction, the time for making the documents available for inspection by the students, and the statistical analysis of the examination results. METHODS: Since three semesters a computer program for input and formatting of MC-questions in medical and other paper-based examinations is used and continuously improved at Wuerzburg University. In the winter semester (WS) 2009/10 eleven, in the summer semester (SS) 2010 twelve and in WS 2010/11 thirteen medical examinations were accomplished with the program and automatically evaluated. For the last two semesters the remaining manual workload was recorded. RESULTS: The cost of the formatting and the subsequent analysis including adjustments of the analysis of an average examination with about 140 participants and about 35 questions was 5-7 hours for exams without complications in the winter semester 2009/2010, about 2 hours in SS 2010 and about 1.5 hours in the winter semester 2010/11. Including exams with complications, the average time was about 3 hours per exam in SS 2010 and 2.67 hours for the WS 10/11. DISCUSSION: For conventional multiple-choice exams the computer-based formatting and evaluation of paper-based exams offers a significant time reduction for lecturers in comparison with the manual correction of paper-based exams and compared to purely electronically conducted exams it needs a much simpler technological infrastructure and fewer staff during the exam.

RESUMO

Computer skills have been established as important for nursing students and for graduate nurses. No current research was found on the best method to evaluate the skills of incoming nursing students. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to compare student ratings of their computer competency to their performance of those skills on a computer-graded assessment. A convenience sample of 87 nursing students was used. There was a low, but significant correlation between the scores on the survey and the assessment. The results suggest that students rate themselves higher on their skills than their actual performance of computer skills. Implications for educators are presented, and the value of using a computer-graded assessment is discussed.

RESUMO

Important patterns can be found in strings of characters such as nucleotides in a DNA sequence by examining the frequency of occurrence of specific character combinations or words. The abundance of words can reveal the presence of underlying trends governing the order of characters, even if the biological reasons for those trends remain mysterious. As an example of one way in which word frequencies have provided insight, we describe the IMEter, a word-based algorithm for analyzing introns and their effect on gene expression. The IMEter demonstrates that introns located near the beginning of genes are compositionally distinct from later introns and that these differences are closely related to the ability of some introns to increase gene expression. This word-based approach has proven more successful than deletion analysis at identifying the sequences responsible for elevating expression because they are dispersed throughout stimulatory introns.

RESUMO

Translating clinical research into practical applications that are cost effective has received significant attention as staff nurses attempt to expand new knowledge into an already complex daily workflow. spreadsheet/table template created in a word processing format can assist with setting up and carrying out the analysis of costs for comparing different approaches to routine activities. By encouraging nurses to take the initiative to examine parts of everyday nursing practice with an eye to cost analysis, significant contributions can be made to maximizing the bottom line.

RESUMO

Sitting on a therapy ball or standing may be a passive means of increasing energy expenditure throughout the workday. The purpose of this study was to determine the energy expenditure and liking of performing clerical work in various postures. Subjects included 24 men and women employed in sedentary clerical occupations. Energy expenditure was measured while word processing in three standardized postures; sitting in an office chair, sitting on a therapy ball, and standing. Adults ranked their comfort, fatigue, and liking of each posture and were asked to perform their choice of 20 min of additional clerical work in one of the postures. Energy expenditure was 4.1 kcal/h greater (p or= 0.48). Subjects also liked sitting on a therapy ball as much as sitting in an office chair and liked sitting on a therapy ball more than standing (p

RESUMO

Physicians in Kentucky have been slow to endorse and implement electronic medical records and other forms of information technology (IT), although this technology is available to them. Information was ob tained from medical relicensure data for all licensed Kentucky physicians and through two sample surveys to assess the use of IT in Kentucky medicine. Sixty-eight percent of licensed physicians recorded an e-mail address on their annual relicensure application, but more physicians were knowledgeable about IT than indicated by this relicensure response. A recorded e-mail address was more likely for younger physicians, physicians in hospital-based specialties, and those in larger medical specialty or academic physician groups. Those entering an email address were more likely to use IT for e-mail, word-processing, searching medical literature, and even consulting with other physicians. Only 10% of physicians with an e-mail address and 4.5% ofj those who did not list an e-mail address used e-mail to communicate with patients. Physicians entering an e-mail address were also more likely to employ an electronic medical record in their practice. Increased use of IT in medical practices is likely only if it can be associated with an increase in reimbursement or an improvement in quality of care.
